Approximately 60% of the waste is recycled while the remaining waste is used for heat production for the city’s regional heating network. Only 2% of the waste is wasted. At the same time, the city has drastically improved its wastewater treatment by modernizing its sewerage system and replacing overflow channels in the lima. This situation contrasts with the waste management of the city in 1988; at that time 40% of the city’s wastes were being sent to the landfill and the incineration of waste caused unhealthy pollution concerns.
